This is what happens when I meet someone for the first time and I tell them what I do:
Stranger: So what do you do?
Me: I am a consultant ...SAP consultant
Stranger: (blank look) Oh.....hmmm...what is that?
Me: It's software....ERP software....
Stranger: (the blank look becomes a lost look)...huh...hmmmm
Me: (trying to make it better) it's software for the whole business....all business processes...
Stranger: huh....hmmmm....so what did you think of ....(they get to their real question or the reason they started to talk to me)
Sometimes they are interested....sometimes I make it worse by explaining what SAP is (in my defense sometimes they ask for it!).Then there are the times when they come back with "So is this what you wanted to do?" When that happens I always laugh and say "NO" . Don't get me wrong. I love what I am doing now, but it is not what I dreamt of doing when I was young. Growing up, I had schoolmates/ classmates, a lucky few who knew exactly what they wanted to do and how they would get there. I was NOT one of them. I switched options, I tried things out and then, I chose this line of work.
As one of my Managers says: if you're not having fun doing what you're doing, you have only yourself to blame. You're young/ or were young at one time when you chose this career. Be brave, switch to something else if you're not having fun, if it's not getting you excited, if it's not challenging you. Find out what is, and do that.
So, even though I dreamt of being a Singer/ Dancer, A TV crew Camera person (whole new story for another day behind this career choice)an Architect, a Genetic engineer, Real estate tycoon (yeah, this was in 2004), a writer, I am now happy where I am.
And when that changes, I'll change my answer to "What will I be when I grow up?" .....because I can!
